چکیده

This is dedicated to my family and everyone else who helped me along my way just so they could see me succeed. This is also dedicated to the innocent students and faculty who lost their lives at Virginia Tech on April 16, 2007 doing what I am doing now: pursuing a higher education. iv ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I would like to thank Dr. Ali Adibi for being my advisor, for always being accommodating and willing to provide me with any help and resource that I may need with my project or any other endeavors. I also appreciate the opportunity to be a part of his group and to do research in an area in which I am interested. I would especially like to thank Dr. Siva Yegnanarayanan for serving as a mentor and providing me with invaluable and necessary assistance during the course of my work and research. My research and thesis would not have been possible without him. I also am grateful for all of my group members for readily going out of their way if I asked them for help with anything. I would also like to thank Dr. Ralph and Dr. Chang for taking time out to serve on my thesis reading committee. Finally, I would like to thank my mother for all of the support that she has given me through the years. There are not enough words to express my gratitude. Without her guidance, I would not be where I am or who I am today. This thesis is mainly dedicated to you (and so that I can graduate). Thank you.

Improvement of Optical Properties in Hexagonal Index-guiding Photonic Crystal Fiber for Optical Communications

Waveguides with low confinement loss, low chromatic dispersion, and low nonlinear effects are used in optical communication systems. Optical fibers can also be employed in such systems. Besides optical fibers, photonic crystal fibers are also highly suitable transmission media for optical communication systems. In this paper, we introduce two new designs of index-guiding photonic crystal fiber ...

Fiber chromatic dispersion measurement based on wavelength-to-time mapping using a femtosecond pulse laser and an optical comb filter

A novel method for the measurement of chromatic dispersion of an optical fiber based on wavelength-to-time mapping using a femtosecond pulse laser (FSPL) and an optical comb filter is proposed and experimentally evaluated. In the proposed approach, the spectrum of an ultrashort optical pulse generated by an FSPL is sliced by an optical comb filter. The spectrum-sliced optical pulse is then coup...

Dispersive Fourier Transformation for Versatile Microwave Photonics Applications

Dispersive Fourier transformation (DFT) maps the broadband spectrum of an ultrashort optical pulse into a time stretched waveform with its intensity profile mirroring the spectrum using chromatic dispersion. Owing to its capability of continuous pulse-by-pulse spectroscopic measurement and manipulation, DFT has become an emerging technique for ultrafast signal generation and processing, and hig...

Chromatic dispersion and losses of microstructured optical fibers.

Using a rigorous and vector multipole method, we compute both losses and dispersion properties of microstructured optical fibers with finite cross sections. We restrict our study to triangular lattices of air-hole inclusions in a silica matrix, taking into account material dispersion. The fiber core is modeled by a missing inclusion. The influence of pitch, hole diameter, and number of hole rin...

A Comparative Study of Multipole and Empirical Relations Methods for Effective Index and Dispersion Calculations of Silica-Based Photonic Crystal Fibers

In this paper, we present a solid-core Silica-based photonic crystal fiber (PCF) composed of hexagonal lattice of air-holes and calculate the effective index and chromatic dispersion of PCF for different physical parameters using the empirical relations method (ERM). These results are compared with the data obtained from the conventional multipole method (MPM). Our simulation results reveal tha...
